Music for film is as much about individual sound as it is about full orchestrations. A memorable film score might consist of no more than an unique instrument, such as a drum made from drain pipes, or a harp made of glass sticks. Innovation is celebrated by Volume57.
Darko Rundek and his orchestra are playing on cargo ships and Burgundian watermills. If you are lucky you might hear them perform live. An internationally acclaimed poet and composer, Darko has written and produced numerous film scores, has occasionally appeared as an actor, and has directed more than 50 radio plays and documentaries for Radio Zagreb, for which he also wrote the music. You might spot Darko at Place de la Nation in Paris. It is raining and he attaches his rusty bike to one of those beautiful Parisian street lamps, and music happens.
A hot summer day, a Sunday on Weinmeisterstrasse, Berlin-Mitte. There is that store where they sell pianos and they put a piano on the sidewalk to grab attention. A guy shows up and says: ?Can I play it?? He plays beautifully, magnificently. People start gathering around him, and the crowd swells to 40 or 57 people. Along the street windows open; people stick their heads out to savor the music. After a while the mysterious man stops playing: ?I don?t know what to play anymore,? he says. Someone in the crowd takes off his hat and puts 10 Euros inside it and places it on the piano. Other spectators throw in some more money. Do you know who he could have been?
